Rio Returns

The Cett4 film group's second showing of their film 'H-Town or Outtatown' is now viewable on You Tube.  Screened earlier this year at the Rio Cinema in Hackney, the short film gives you a brief taster of what the film is all about as well as audience reactions. Watch it here 'H-Town or Outtatown - an introduction'!

Hackney - 'Oh My Days'

Young people living around the Clapton Common area of Hackney were given a challenge this summer: to come up with a professional production in two weeks and stage a two night performance.   ‘Oh My Days’ was the final product, a time-travelling piece that jumped from nineteenth century ocean liner to contemporary classroom and blurred the traditional boundaries between audience and performers.  Developed from the groups’ ideas, the script was written by Jane Bodie and produced by Immediate Theatre and Elevate.

Slip Project

A group of young women from different estates in North East Hackney were brought together in August to investigate issues surrounding territorialism.  A high percentage of young people in North East Hackney report that they feel unable to cross into neighbouring estates or use nearby youth provision due to concerns of territory. Incorporating 5 drama workshops and a residential in Dorset, the Slip Project gave the group a space to develop new friendships and begin building positive cross-estate networks.

Canning Town – Streetlevel

Streetlevel returned to Youth House in Canning Town this summer by popular demand.   With drum kit, guitar, keyboard and assorted hand-held percussion in tow, Marcel and Josh transformed the centre into a hub of rhythm, often enticing people from the neighbouring rooms and even streets to listen.  Over 20 young people took part during the week and we are trying to identify funding to make this a regular event.

Lewisham – Lewisham Community Sports

With contributions from Pinnacle Brockley and Higgins Construction, Elevate put in place a sponsored place scheme with Lewisham Community Sports this summer. 85 half price spaces were offered to Pinnacle residents on the 6 week programme that encompassed 12 different activities.  We hope that this is the start of a new and exciting partnership in the Brockley area.

WHAT'S GONE?

Cett 4 Success

A group of young people from the Fawcett estate have won a £2000 award from the RSA, beating of stiff competition from other youth groups.  Inspired by the success of the Cett4 film project, the group wanted to build on their film-making skills by producing a docu-drama investigating young people's relationship with the police.

With the help of Tania, our youth worker, the group wrote their award winning application and were subsequently invited to receive the award from Jim Knight, MP Minister for Schools and Families at the Houses of Parliament.

Now we just have to wait for the next Fawcett premiere!

Jack Petchey Achievement Awards

The first Jack Petchey Achievment Awards have been made to young people in our Jack Watts, Fawcett and Amwell Court groups.  The Awards require each group to nominate someone who they feel has made a particular contribution over three months and gives them £300 to spend on the group.

  • Amwell Court have decided to hold a canal clear up, spending one of their evenings clearing up rubbish from the waterside. Those that attend will then be able to go on a group trip to somewhere like Chessington.
  • The Jack Watts' awardee has decided with the group to put the money towards refurbishing and repainting the communal flat that they currenlty use for forum meetings.  We are looking for match funding to complement their £300 and make a real improvement to the environment

Water Works

We are now running the second installment of canoeing sessions at the West Reservoir in North East Hackney.  Funded by The Manor Tenants and Residents Association, the course is enabling 20 young people from the neighbouring estates to make the most of their local watersports centre and develop their paddling skills.  Feedback from the course has been overwhelmingly positive and we are hoping to be able to repeat it next year.
