ARCHIVED NEWS
Our youth workers have started! After months of fundraising and recruiting for the right people, it gives us great pleasure to introduce Elevate’s new youth workers, Tania de St Croix and Alice Nicholas.
Tania has joined us following 12 years of detached youth work where she’s been working with young people to develop projects and enabling them to have a say in the issues affecting their lives and their local areas. Alice is an applied drama practitioner who has been working with young people and community groups facilitating drama, scriptwriting, story writing and applied drama projects.
Together they will be working in the North East Neighbourhood in Hackney and in Canning Town, Newham engaging with young people on some of the most deprived estates in these areas. They will be carrying out detached youth work, building long term relationships with young people, helping to build positive social networks and feeding young people into a range of activities being run by Elevate or our partner organisations. Working with Pinnacle’s local housing offices and through targeted outreach we particularly work to engage with young people at risk of (re)offending or engaging in ASB and provide a much needed support network.
Churchill Gardens Speaks Out
We are in the beginning stages of re-igniting the Churchill Gardens Youth Forum, which was started up in 2006. Together with the Churchill Gardens Youth Centre, CWH and Pinnacle staff, we want to create an opportunity for young people in the area to voice their opinions, develop their skills and contribute to the development of their local environment. The first meeting is scheduled for the beginning of October and we hope that it will be the beginning of a sustainable and interactive relationship between young people and their estate.
Summer Schemes...
Summer Schemes, organised by Elevate and Pinnacle, have taken place in Hackney for the last 3 years, Lewisham for the past 5 years, Newham for the past year (click here for details about past schemes) and once again happened during 2007's summer holidays. These activities were aimed at 8-18 year olds and were either free or had a nominal fee attached.
in Hackney...
In 2007, The Academy of Sport East London ran free football coaching from 6th-10th August in Haggerston Park. A group of talented Hackney footballers had an intensive week of core skills training, game-playing and free-styling tips. Dr.Bike visited for an afternoon and the week finished with a tournament. Click here for details of the event. Next summer we want to have more activities for girls and will be looking for inspiration in the new year! in Newham...
In partnership with Youth House, Canning Town, we ran an accreditated music production course with Point Blank. Designed for complete beginners, the course provided an opportunity for young people to make their own tracks, whether hip hop, house or R&B, garage or grime.
Streetlevel also ran a successful four day course on world rhythms, Latin and African percussion and contemporary music with a group of 15 young people. The workshops culminated in a performance and was so popular that we are looking for funding to keep the project going.
in Lewisham...
Summer Breakz in Lewisham followed a slightly different format than usual. Working in partnership with Family Mosaic, L&Q Housing and the Lewisham Youth Service, we provided a four week summer scheme in Ladywell. Over 100 young people registered and took part in drama, dance, mosaic-making, music and drumming, graffiti art, film-making, sports, tree-jumping and much more. For more details please click here
Cross-borough football tournament
In Hackney, we are working in Partnership with The Academy of SportEast London. The Academy recentlyran a Hackney and Haringey cross-borough football tournament. All local primary schools were invited to enter their best under-11 team and battled it out to be in the final, played at the Tottenham Hotspur's training ground.
St John the Baptist (Hackney) met Broadwater (Haringey) in a game that went onto a penalty shootout, with Hackney finally receiving the winning trophy from Richard Allen, Head of Youth Development at Tottenham Hotspurs...

Speak Out - Elevate's Youth Conference
On February 10th 2006, Elevate held a conference for young people between the ages of 14-19 to enable them to take control of what the charity does and how it implements it. Participants from the boroughs of Newham, Lewisham and Hackney had the opportunity to come up with ideas for projects for their areas and develop action plans as how to develop them post conference.
One Spirit
The One Spirit workshops aim to break the cycle of offending and social exclusion using arts and music. In April 2006, 15 young people from Hackney completed this 8 week course in music production, lyric writing and singing run by a partnership of organisations including One Projects, Elevate, Pinnacle and the Hackney Youth Offending Team.
Christmas Card Competition
Elevate organised a competition at Forest Hill Boys School to design Pinnacle’s corporate Christmas Card. The competition was won by Alfie Brett. Click here to see the winning design. Alfie has won tickets to go and see Chelsea Football Club play at Stamford Bridge.
In 2004 Elevate and Pinnacle successfully supported Forest Hills Boys School in its bid for Specialist Status in Performing Arts.
